A friend once told me she didn\u2019t budget because it was \u201cjust setting yourself up to fail.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first I was adamant: \u201cNo way! Having a budget is the only way not<\/em> to fail!\u201d But then I started to think about it. I had made more budgets than I could count and a lot of them had<\/em> failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mostly it worked out like this: Bitten by the get-organized bug, I\u2019d run out and buy new notepads, pens and a calculator, assuming office supplies would naturally make me a better budgeter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first day I\u2019d make a budget with about 30 different categories to track all my spending, even down to hand soap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next week I\u2019d save all my receipts, and add them to one of my 30 categories at night. I would also check my bank accounts online daily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So by Week 2 I\u2019d grow tired of being hyper-vigilant, feel stressed out by my complex budget, and chuck the whole thing in the trash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So maybe she wasn\u2019t entirely wrong. Budgets do set you up to fail, but only if you set them<\/em> up to fail. Eventually I learned the easy way to budget for myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are a few secrets to make a budget work for you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Start with a goal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Not having a clear goal was a big part of why my budgets failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first, my only foreseeable goal was \u201cmanage money<\/a>.\u201d I\u2019d create a budget for every\u00a0category of spending and\u00a0then add in a random dollar amount for saving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those aren\u2019t clear, actionable goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before you create a budget, decide what you really want. Maybe it\u2019s building a $25,000 emergency account, or going on a $5,000 vacation next year, or putting $40,000 down on a new house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whatever you want, figure out exactly how much you\u2019ll need to save each week or month to get there and make that<\/em> your goal. Then use your budget to keep your spending in check and you\u2019ll actually reach your goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make your budget simple<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I mentioned my 30 different categories \u2014 twice, in fact \u2013 for a reason: Budgets can (and should) be simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you\u2019re doing something as important as managing your money, a complex system of budgeting and tracking seems like the way to go, but it isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you spend the first hour of your day checking accounts, tracking spending and adjusting spreadsheet columns, you\u2019ll quickly get tired of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your budget can be as simple as you want. Want to limit yourself to three categories, such as \u201chousehold,\u201d \u201cdebt\u201d and \u201csavings\u201d? Go for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

To simplify the budgeting process, consider using the 50\/20\/30 rule of budgeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Track automatically<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Much of what I\u2019ve read about budgeting says to track your expenses with a pen and paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Come on now, it\u2019s 2013. It\u2019s time to start tracking your spending. It\u2019s the only way to know you\u2019re staying within your spending limits and where you can cut back. But you don\u2019t have to do it manually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are loads of budgeting sites and software to do it for you, such as Mint<\/a>. It\u2019s free and, when you link your accounts, your spending is automatically added to the categories you set up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Think outside the 30 days<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A monthly household budget might be the most common, but that doesn\u2019t mean you have to have one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you struggle to keep up with a 30-day budget, or find that you overspend early in the cycle and come up short at the end of the month,\u00a0why not\u00a0shorten your time frame?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It might mean you have to get a little creative with your Mint account, but if it helps you stay on track, then it\u2019s worth it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I know people who work best with a two-week budget, or budgeting for every pay<\/a>check<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t lie to yourself<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A few of my budget attempts failed because I budgeted for my best intentions, not reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, I used to have dinner and drinks with friends every Friday night, spending about $50. Rather than including that in my budget, I told myself I\u2019d just stop going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, that didn\u2019t happen. Instead, I went $100 over my budget every month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re trying to increase savings, you\u2019ll have to reduce expenses somewhere. Just be realistic about what you\u2019re willing to do without.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Use rewards to trick your brain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Another problem with my old budgeting system was that it highlighted the things I didn\u2019t want to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For instance, I didn\u2019t want to have to skip buying the fancy cheese to keep my grocery budget in check. I started hating my budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now I do it differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I budget three months in advance<\/a>, and plan a reward at the end of the third month.\u00a0As long as I stay within\u00a0my budget for three months, I can buy myself whatever I want with that reward money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because I really want those shoes, that nice dinner, or a new stack of books, I\u2019m motivated to keep on track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bottom line<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I use a few secret hacks to keep myself in check, but those aren\u2019t the only methods available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As long as you come up with what works best for you, it shouldn\u2019t be too hard to stick to your guns and keep expenses tracked and within your means.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
